Only half a mile long, it can easily be walked in about 10 minutes, though you can make the loop as many times as you want for the right length hike for you! The trail follows a small peninsula that is part of the Sand Harbor Beach State Park, surrounded by spectacular views of Lake Tahoe. Plan on paying an entry fee (typical for Nevada State Parks), and unfortunately, leashed pets are only allowed on the trail during the offseason spanning mid-October through mid-April.
Five Lakes Trail is a 4.8-mile out-and-back trail near Olympic Valley, California. It’s a moderately challenging route. The majority of the elevation gain happens in the first mile or so of the hike. Set aside about two and a half hours to explore this gorgeous trail, which is popular for backpacking, hiking, and horseback riding. Its dramatic yet tranquil surroundings are best in the summer after the snow has melted. At the end of the trail, you’ll be rewarded with beautiful views of the Five Lakes, which offer plenty of solitude even on busier days.
Andesite Peak is a 4.7-mile out-and-back trail near Soda Springs that is a great option for hikers looking for a more challenging route. In the late spring and summer, once the snow has melted, the trail comes alive with vibrant greenery and wildlife. In the winter, when everything is gently covered in snow, Andesite Peak is a fabulous trail for snowshoeing or cross-country skiing. This alpine trail is a gorgeous way to explore the Lake Tahoe wilderness, especially if you’re an experienced hiker!
The trails leading out to Azalea and Flora Lake offer 2.7 miles of gorgeous scenic views for a hike that lasts roughly an hour. But the trails become perfect for winter snow play once the snow has begun to fall. You’ll start your hike along the Glacier Loop Trail and transition to the Donner Summit Lakes Trail. This gives access to both beautiful lakes.
