About Kidzone in Truckee
The KidZone Museum began as a grassroots movement back in 1992. A group of parents, educators, and agencies opened the Sierra Nevada Children’s Museum to serve the rural and isolated community around Truckee, California. In the 30 years since opening, they have served a huge number of children and families, providing opportunities for hands-on exploration and play. Their commitment to reaching as many families as possible is evident in their community partnerships and outreach, including hiring Spanish-speaking staff and offering a free bus service for families living in poverty.
Increasing access to learning programs and growing a diverse, inclusive, and accessible community is at the heart of everything KidZone does. Their exhibits offer children and families “the tools necessary to share creative learning opportunities together while securing healthy and loving connections.” They are currently planning an extension to reach even more families and provide an inventive play space for even more generations of Sierra Nevada children!
Fun For All Ages
KidZone Museum has a variety of fun exhibits designed for Truckee little ones ages seven and under. The littlest visitors will enjoy the aquatic and nature-themed Infant Room, where babies can practice rolling, crawling, and cruising in a safe environment made just for them!
A family favorite exhibit is Sierra Settlers, which gives kids the opportunity to explore the Sierra Nevada area’s history with plenty of imagination. Kids can role-play as settlers on a train to Truckee or shop at the Chinese Herb Shop and Blacksmith. This exhibit helps kids develop social-emotional, fine and gross motor, and cognitive skills, as well as creativity!
There is also an indoor play structure, perfect for burning off some energy on cold or rainy days, and an indoor art studio that is perfect for growing creative masterminds. The outdoor Nature Play area lets little ones explore with sand, mud, water, and dirt in a safe environment, and the Science Lab is great for hands-on experiments. There’s always something fun to learn, imagine, and discover at KidZone Museum!

Want to harness the magic of KidZone Truckee but can’t make it to the museum? Check out KidZone@Home! This program provides families with specially curated lesson plans, activities, and learning videos selected by KidZone staff to experience with your little ones from the comfort of home. There are currently three different options for KidZone@Home. Their Play package keeps your kids busy with hands-on activities and crafts. The Discover package keeps kids learning with play-based experiments. Lastly, the Connect package focuses on connecting with family, friends, and the community with projects that encourage group participation and engagement! However you experience KidZone, there’s always something new to learn and enjoy.
